The course is used to satisfy the sociology masters requirement. This course is an introduction to the study of how individual impacts and is affected by the social context in which they live. It is about the scientific study of the relationships, groups, society, and world in which the individual lives. Topics to be emphasized includes culture, socialization, institutions, deviance and social control, social inequality and stratification as well as globalisation

Course Overview

This course is an intention to make the students realize the necessity of sociological theories in the study of sociology. Students will learn how different phenomenon of everyday life can be related to the different classical sociological theories. The course talks about important concepts like division of labour in society and its applicability. The course also talks about class and class struggle . Important concepts like religion, suicide, power, authority and bureaucracy are covered up in this syllabus.

This course talks about the concept of family and marriage sociologically, the course also talks about certain key terms like affinity, descent, incest taboo and the like. The course also contains about kinship and family patterns in various parts of India. The new pattern in kinship and marriage, gay and lesbian relationship and marriage, surrogacy, New Reproductive Technology are also a part of this course.

This course combines didactic classroom sessions with substantial project work to create a systematic literature review. Students will be taught how to perform each step in a review and will then be expected to apply it to a topic of their choosing. They will get feedback at each stage in the process. The final deliverable for the course will be a systematic literature review.

This course aims to provide a “how to” of ethnographic research and, in the process, examine the epistemology, conduct, and politics of fieldwork. It is therefore designed for students who are willing to engage in focused, hands-on training on ethnographic theory and practice. To best take advantage of what this seminar has to offer, you are urged to come in with some sketch of a research plan that you would be ready to either directly study in the field or explore th ough field exercises in a few weeks. We will critically examine a number of aspects and approaches to doing and writing ethnography. We will discuss the challenges of entering, being in, and leaving the field. And we will explore alterrnative data collection techniques/media.

This course offers an introduction to Gender Studies, an interdisciplinary field that asks critical questions about the meanings of sex and gender in society.
